Hollywood Weekend Box Office: M. Knight Shyamalan's Old debuts at no. 1 and is already in profit zone; Black Widow crosses $150 million

The eagerly anticipated horror movie, Old, opened this past weekend in theatres across the US, finding itself in familiar territory for Director M. Knight Shyamalan atop the box office. Old brought in $16.5 million at the Hollywood box office, a 40% drop from the opening of M. Knight Shyamalan's last two release, Glass and Split, which had also taken pole position. However, considering the anxiety over the delta variant of COVID-19 on American soil, and the fact that most production houses are opting for a PVOD (premium video on demand) soon after the theatrical roll out, the first weekend box office collection of Old is more than respectable, especially when factoring in its thrifty $18 million budget.

However, those waiting for an early PVOD release for OLD, would be disappointed as Universal has, this time, decided to allow the movie to spend more time in theatres as per traditional standards. Anyway, the PVOD expectancy and COVID-19 scare has still not stopped M. Knight Shyamalan from achieving his seventh no. 1 opener at the US box office. At second spot is Snake Eyes with $13.5 million. The Henry Golding starrer from Paramount's G.I. Joe franchise is in much hotter soup with a reported budget north of $88 million.

Meanwhile, MCU's Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, came in third with $11.6 million, a 55% drop in its third weekend, which pushes it beyond the $150-million mark ($154 million in 17 days to be precise), reiterating the fact that Marvel still rules the roost at the box office even during the coronavirus curve. Last week's topper, Space Jam: A New Legacy, dropped to fourth spot with a steep 69% decline, brining its domestic total to $50 million and worldwide cume to $94 million still enough to be declared a hit during these times. Vin Diesel and John Cena's Fast & Furious 9 rounds up top five this weekend, with $4.6 million in its fifth weekend, taking its domestic and worldwide collection to $163.3 million and $621 million. Fingers crossed the Indian box office will see such good time soon again.
