Kal Penn, an actor, director, and former White House staff member, has defended Priyanka Chopra after her recent dietary choice sparked an unexpected online controversy. The issue started when Priyanka chose hot dogs over the popular Mumbai street food vada pav during a red carpet interview at the launch of her movie "Heads of State." Some followers were disappointed by her decision, while others were amused. Some even accused her of abandoning Indian street cuisine. However, Kal Penn, who starred in the films "Harold & Kumar" and "Designated Survivor," responded to the criticism with the straightforward query, "Are people not allowed to like other things?" In an interview with Indian Express, Kal acknowledged that he hadn't seen all of Priyanka's statements, but he talked candidly about dealing with similar situations. He recounted that when he revealed that tacos were his favourite cuisine on MasterChef, the judges were taken aback.
What did Kal do when asked to cook Indian dish?
"They were clearly disappointed, and then they asked me whether I could cook something like chicken tikka masala or something Indian. I told them straight away no, and they asked me, 'Do you not like Indian food?' I told them I loved Indian food, and I had even planned on cooking one of my mother's recipes on the show, but now I am definitely not going to do it," Kal shared.
Why can't people like different things?: Kal
Kal thinks that, particularly in terms of culture, people frequently anticipate that celebrities would act in a particular manner. "For me, it's just the silliness of the fact that are people not allowed to like other things? I think people just project their own likes and dislikes, so I just laugh it off," he said. Kal also penned a note for Priyanka. He said, "I know and love her. I find her to be completely authentic and wonderful, and unapologetically so, which is very refreshing."
